DDO is doing that because it's about dead.
More like what CZity of Heroes/ City of Villians is doing. Buy the game and pay per month. All upgrades are free. _________________ "I'm Hotep" |

I can't pay per month. I wouldn't play enough to warrant the investment. How about Dungeon Runners, then if you think DDO is dead. They have been doing the same thing since it came out.
So, free means dead or does it mean more people will play?

It means the game didn't play well. few people liked it, even for free.
it's rules are different that 3.0, 3.5 and 4E. _________________ "I'm Hotep" |

| I would pay per month, as long as it was reasonable, and the cost was reflected in the game. |

| this would get me playing mmo again but maybe if it could be done like pirates of the Caribbean free to download and free to play the irst few levels but if you want to build your character up then you need to pay a small monthly fee |

There are a few non-fantasy mmos and there are more on the way.
There was Hellgate:London which was kinda rippers like but with the high/magic tech being much higher tech than rippers. Plus the game was more of a FPS with levelling and the thinest layer of rpg on top. Still its kinda fun to play.
I do think rippers is just about perfect for an MMORPG. The lodge structure is guild like. The hunting and adventures are very quest like, the rippertech makes for a cool hook and crafting option. It would be simple enough to come up with setting fluff to give the cabal a similar structure to the rippers and set them up as the other side to bring in some pvp. Though I suspect that would work better in the CoH/CoV fashion rather than the WoW one, I'm sure a way could be worked out to make it WoW-like if that was more desirable.
Still the cost of putting together and running an mmo means this would only happen if PEG/GWG could find a computer game company looking for a setting to build an mmo for. |

You would like the Guild Wars model then.
Purchase the game and optional expansions.
Play for free.

| Every free MMO I have played is awful. There are more than enough lousy free games out there for the kiddies. Fifteen or twenty bucks a month is a reasonable price for even casual gamers. |

I don't mind paying to "PLAY", I do mind paying to "Treadmill".
So many games are level treadmills and not games to "play".
The plus side of Guild Wars, NO level treadmill and because of that, your friends didn't level out of range of you, if you had a real life.

| I stick to pvp, seeing pve as a tedious chore to make money and hit max leve/stats, so I sidestep the whole treadmill issue entirely. |

Anyone got about $7M? I'd LOVE to make it happen and do have some experience at this sort of thing...

| I say drop the MMO idea, and make it an action rpg ala Torchlight/Diablo. Lots of Cabal monster bashing, iconic baddies, cool Rippertech items, some online co-op, keep the price low (20ish like Torchlight), probably would sell well I think! |

Rippers is a Facebook game. If you are on Facebook, you can search for it. There is a link somewhere around here, but you need a Facebook account to play it.
This thread is sort of a "I Wish..." thread, asking for a MMO of Rippers. |

| Yea it is sort of a "I wish thread" but it came because of the Facebook game. My wife & I were playing it, and the mmo conversation came up. Rippers (story design era and trade skills) makes it a perfect model for mmo social play. |
