Last night my group just finished running through Murder on the Hellstrome Express. While my GM skills need refining and my roll playing skills don't exist, we all had fun so my Deadlands group is now looking forward to seeing what I run for them next game session.

But I have a few follow-up questions and comments that I was hoping to get a bit of input on regarding the adventure.

First on my mind is, what the hell does it take to stop Dial's automaton? Just about everything my group threw at that thing didn't even make a dent, let alone a wound. That included dynamite, Courtney Morrow's needleguns (she decided to jump in and help when she saw how bad things where going), Private Conrad's Meatgrinder and of course, a boat load of pistols. The odd thing was that what finally took it down was a Indian with a tomahawk. Don't ask me how. Until Plays with Fire (a slight variation on the pre-gen) finally beat the scrap out of the thing, I was at a complete loss on how to wind down the fight (pun intended). I didn't want to make it cheap, I was expecting them to shut the monster out themselves.

My second question comes from the start of the adventure where I promised them all $50 a day. Bailey apparently was willing to go as high as $100 a day. Plus rewards and bonuses. Not too big of a deal, except even then I was thinking, "Gee, that is a lot of money for this time period, isn't it?" And now I am reading adventures, particularly the next one I was thinking of running them on, Blood Drive, where they are hoping to earn what, $35 a month? So, yeah, how am I going to reconcile this? Should I keep paying them like kings? Or do I just let them enjoy the last pile of money they will ever see?

All that having been said, I am having a blast with Savage Worlds and Deadlands. I never expected to have fun running as GM for any game, so this is pretty awesome. I think the Hellstrome Adventure was a fun one to play, and I wish I could have done it more justice, but all in all, it was a great time!

Congratulations on your roaring success. Very Happy

Good luck and decent tactics, plus a Marshal that doesn't try to soak when they are lucky enough to actually wound it. I'm assuming you mean the Behemoth at the end of the adventure.
Called Shots to bypass the armor would help - they'll be at -6 to hit, but ignoring that 4 toughness can be the difference between Shaken and Wounded. With a good double-tap (+1 Shooting and +1 damage), a peacemaker is averaging 10 damage, or 14 if shooting with a raise, against Toughness 14 - which means the other component they need is good luck on their damage rolls.
The real problem is that damage is largely a factor of luck. I've seen 2d4 deal 29 damage and I've seen 2d12+2 deal 5 damage - this is what makes the No Mercy edge so good, the ability to reroll a really bad damage result.

Bailey was hiring quality trouble-shooters to help him with an insanely dangerous mission against powerful and unknown opposition, that has potential rewards that overshadow even all of those downsides. This was like being hired by Steve Jobs, in 1978, to escort the Mac to a (fictional) IBM Trade Show that would be attended by representatives of every government in the West - his fantastic product will make obscene piles of money, so he'll use his entire wealth (savings, mortgaged house, family investment, remaining loans, and every other dollar he can scrape together) to hire guards that guarantee he and his goods will arrive safely.
This was one of the biggest paydays of their lives - they made more money off this job than they probably made in the last 10 years. They're all (temporarily) rich by the standards of 80-odd % of the world. Make sure they realize that.

After the flush wears off, they'll have to go back to normal wages. But they can have themselves a great time ending up in South Texas (hungover, broke, and with only hazy memories of the last five weeks). Laughing
