I've never been a fan of it in any game.
I ran my first SW session, and rereading the rules afterward (to see what I forgot), I realized we hadn't used facing.
Does it break the game to not use it? Anything other than shields? |

| Never used it, never been an issue. Mind you, I've not run a game that uses shields, so am not sure whether this would change things. |

I've ran a lot of fantasy games with a lot of characters using shields and I don't think I've even worried about facing. It makes shields a little bit more powerful, but it never seemed like a big deal.
I figured if the character was in combat and aware of the attack, the shield counts. It the character got hit by surprise, like with the Drop from behind, no shield bonus. _________________

Haven't been using it, and haven't seen it break anything. _________________ -Kerry Harrison

What Wibbs said (and I have a game that uses shields). _________________ Andy

I made the conscious decision not to use facing, and I've never looked back. I prefer round bases on minis; I guess it's the old d20 gamer in me. That seems to add a level of minutiae that adds very little to the enjoyment of the game. Clint may disagree. _________________ My online portfolio:

| I use facing for ranged attacks, but not for the shield parry bonus. I also treat shields as cover (instead of an armour bonus) against ranged attacks, so the facing thing isn't really any different to other types of cover - if you're standing behind a tree, it won't give you any cover against someone who's on the same side of the tree as you. |

Using facing, because without it good team tactics or bright ideas leading to shoot or hit in the back are left unrewarded. But I don't think that not using it breaks the game, it just makes it more abstract. _________________ Savage Worlds Toybox |

| I've used facing only for dramatic or cinematic effect - i.e, target caught unaware, or players or NPCs deliberately attempting to take advantage of it. |

Use facing when its appropriate, and ignore it otherwise.
If you have 2 orcs and a mage in triangle formation:
M
O O
And someone runs between the orcs intent on the mage, Beyond being stupid, I would argue that either the orcs or the mage have a clear shot at this guy's back.
Its a concept of "Use Common Sense" Someone running in a direction isn't twirling in circles to protect himself, while two guys standing side by side in melee combat are probably moving more than their "minis" say they are. _________________ Aperture Science:

No, I never worried about it. However, I haven't play anything that deals with shields much. _________________ Playing: Deadlands Noir, Planescape via D&D 4th ed
