Hey all,
This is my first post, but I've been pouring over the IZ rules and found the blurb about having to have a d8 Hacking skill in addition to the other requirements to get the Thief professional edge.
I totally agree with this, but it does add difficult in acquiring the edge while limiting utility. In simplest terms, in a pre-electronics setting all locks and traps are physical and therefore a thief would get +2 to all related rolls, but in IZ they lose the bonus if the lock or device is electronic in nature.
My solution is to give the +2 to analogous activities regardless of the skill involved. For example, if the thief is trying to hack the hyper object on a security door or motion sensor they get the bonus, but trying to modify a data file would get no such bonus as it is not thematically appropriate to the edge. What does everyone else think? |

Welcome!
I'd suggest dropping the Hacking requirement from the edge. Per the Hacking 2.0 update, Hacking is no longer a free skill (and Knowledge [Programing] is deleted), and interacting with Hyper-Objects changed a lot.
All locks have to have a physical aspect to them, since they are physical barriers. I'd let Thief apply generally, as you Lockpick the physical aspect of the lock - that does very little for locks that only have a digital access on one side, or that are wired into an alarm system, but there's a reason you want a Hacker along. But, as a cat burglar, you can use unusual approaches that let you completely bypass those pesky all-digital locks.
Good gaming! _________________ "Got a problem? I've got the solution: Rocket Launcher."

Hiya and welcome to the boards!
I'll echo what ValhallaGH said.
If you want to play a Thief in IZ, Just drop the hacking requirement from that edge altogether and also pick up the hacking skill.
Interface Zero 2.0 is going to examine all the edges again to make sure we have them the way they need to be, so you won't see that in the second edition.
Thanks so much for your support. _________________ David Jarvis

| good to know we can drop the hacking req for Thief. I made a pre-gen of a rabbit ronin with that edge and I don't think I gave that high a die in hacking. I also forgot where the mod was so I just used SWD version and called it a day. I still gave the rabbit maybe a d6 in Hacking. |
