This will not be a detailed piece by piece review. This will be my feelings about the SWADE Fantasy Companion (SFC) as well as my practical assessment. Here it is.
This book is beautiful. The pages are bright and crisp. The art is relevant, exciting and appropriate in its placement. The text is a good size and laid out in a way that it’s easy to read. It draws me in. I just want to look at it and read it. That’s good layout good design.
The new rules and expansions make me wonder what we did without them. The new edges and hindrances new skills, so many ancestries, tons of gear, useful rules in many different places, treasure lists arcana, and now we even have an alchemist! There’s no filler here it’s all useful. What else could you ask for? Oh yeah – Strongholds!
I love how they took the complexity of strongholds and broke it down into manageable, narrative means as well as practical directions for mechanics. Really well done.
It is my opinion that you cannot compare the original fantasy companion with this SWADE version. This is so much more than an update. This is some of the best work I’ve seen come from Pinnacle.
I am truly so satisfied with this.
